Today, Esther shares her journey of saving for her dream holiday to Southeast Asia!
Let’s introduce ourselves. Esther, who are you?
I am Esther and I am 22 years old. I have just completed my bachelor’s degree at WUR in Wageningen and am currently taking a gap year. Next year, I plan to live in Rotterdam as I will be pursuing a master’s degree at EUR in Rotterdam.
What did you save for with your Potje?
I have always dreamed of travelling to Southeast Asia. To achieve this goal, I started saving during my bachelor’s. I set aside some money every few months. Since student life is quite expensive, I couldn’t save large amounts. It was only during my gap year that I managed to save significant amounts for my dream trip. I worked daily at a bakery for 5 months, which allowed me to save about 600 euros in my Potje each month. By saving this way, I was able to turn my dream holiday to Thailand and Vietnam into reality!
Did you save alone, or also with others?
I did actually save for my dream holiday by myself. However, I also added money I received as a gift for my birthday from others into my dream trip Potje.

What was the most exciting thing you experienced during your trip?
The highlight of my dream holiday was definitely a 4-day motorbike tour in the north of Vietnam, the Ha Giang loop. Together with 6 other backpackers, I rode with Easyriders. They effectively drive the route for you while you sit on the back and enjoy the scenery and the stories they share about the surroundings.
What do you find so convenient about Potje?
I find the payment reminders from Potje very handy! You can turn these on so you don’t forget to set aside money this month. Additionally, I appreciate that you can decide whether to save a set amount regularly in your Potje or choose your own moments for adding money. It’s super cool that you can save for something together.
Have you created a new Potje, Esther?
Absolutely! I'm saving for my next dream holiday. This time it’s a trip to Japan with my boyfriend, and we are managing the Potje together this time! Every month we try to contribute some money. Not necessarily a fixed amount, but just what we can spare!
